The 2.8 L VM built engine is coded as the R428 DOHC [double overhead camshaft] engine, with 2,766 cc or 168.8 cubic inches of displacement. I was surprised to see how many automobiles used VM 2.8L CRD diesel engines. Here is a list I used from Wiki. • 2001–2004 Jeep Cherokee/Liberty (power: 150 hp (110 kW); torque: 251 ft•lbf (360 Nm)).
The former "Grand Cherokee" had a 3,1 l CRD, which has been replaced by a 2.7 l CDI (Mercedes). The were a lot of problems with the old engine. The denomination "CRD" refers to VM engines -(( And Mercedes doesn't have any 2,5 or 2,8 diesel engine, so, the two new engines are most probably made by VM. Maybe not the best choice !
The V6 petrol engine produces 142kW and 305Nm and has a more responsive powerplant than the oil burner. But with a combined city fuel economy figure of 18.8 litres per 100km it can't match the CRD.
