The SP does have a sleep mode, but it's a crude feature handled in hardware by shutting off power to the LCD. It's only supported by a handful of games and flash carts. Since it shuts off power to the LCD, you can get reasonable power savings in sleep mode, especially when running an IPS screen. At the lowest setting, side by side with a stock system, playability is still 100% determined by ambient light. In a dark room, backlit IPS wins, and it's even brighter than the Game Boy Light.
